This hike is to a rarely visited picturesque alpine area between the Knight Ridge and Baby Munday. Our ultimate objective was to ascend the Ridge and get a close-up view of Cheam and the glaciers in between.
The Foley Lake FSR was in poor condition and had huge potholes. It definitely requires a high-clearance vehicle. The Airplane Creek FSR was not gated. However, it proved to be challenging even for our 4x4 truck, as there was a deep water bar at 1.1km mark. We ended up walking the remaining 3km (400m elevation gain) to the trailhead.
For the first 2km, the trail was following a heavily overgrown old road, and it felt almost like bushwalking. But once we crossed the Airplane Creek, the trail became clear and well-marked. The 450m ascend through the forest was brutally steep and quite slippery due to the wet terrain, especially at the bottom.
Once we reached the alpine, the trail became very pleasant and offered great views of Baby Munday, Stewart, and the surrounding peaks. As we were running out of time and clouds were moving in, we decided to call it a day and turn back shortly before reaching the Basin between the Knight Ridge and Baby Munday.
CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS
The beginning of the trail is so overgrown that the path is in danger of disappearing. If you take this trail, please consider bringing some gardening tools and clear a few bushes there.
