12 hours 18.4Km 1,500 Meters Cumulative Elevation
I like to do this one around the longest day of the year because it takes a full day and I have yet to find the perfect path between the mountains.
We left a vehicle at Mike Lake and took a second vehicle to the West Canyon parking lot.
The Climb up to Evans is very steep and includes a very challenging class 3/4 scramble made all the more difficult by the mist and very wet conditions. Unfortunately we were in clouds the whole day so there was not much of a view from the peak. (975m / 3.5 hours / 4.4 km)
Coming down was even more challenging due to the slippery conditions.
The path between the mountains is nice. Once you reach the bottom of Alouette you need to cross a massive boulder field to meet up with the trail around the backside of the mountain.
I tried to avoid the field this year by bush whacking to the west but I couldn't find a suitable path up so we had to back track and cross the boulders (actually this unique little scamper across the boulders is one of the best parts of the hike).
Once up on the plateau on the east side I tried to find the path a took two years ago -- it was under snow that time. Unfortunately rather than going over I came at the ridge from the underside which meant another bit of nasty bush whacking and a particularly steep ascent between a cleft in the rocks. I thought my hiking companions were going to lynch me when they saw what I was leading them through, and not for the first time did I regret not bringing some rope with me.
Having made it up to the ridge it was relatively easy to skirt the mountain to the east until a suitable place was found to link up with the Alouette trail and scamper up to the peak. (1500m / 8hrs / 8km)
The trip down to Mike lake is long but relatively easy and fast, we made it down the 10km trail in around 4 hours.
Note: I had done the trek the previous year in 10.5 hours with a little faster hiking companions.
Unfortunately the GPS cut out right at the most critical part of trail...
If you're going to try and follow it I recommend leaving the marked trail a little higher than my track shows so you can get up on top of the ridge that skirts the mountain.
