I stayed overnight at the Helm Creek camp and day tripped up Gentian Ridge & towards Gentian Peak. This ridge is far less travelled than Panorama Ridge as it is quite rugged and there is no real trail but I think it is just as scenic and gives one the chance to route find, explore and get far from the madding crowd. A good description to access the ridge is in Matt Gunn's Scrambles book (Helm Peak & Castle Towers Mt. routes) and to reach Gentian Peak just follow the ridge around to the right. I only made it to the sub-peak as I ran out of energy, still a nice viewpoint though. Bring micro spikes as there are a few snow slopes to cross that might still be frozen early in the day.
