The new trail is much gradual, well, at least the first 4 miles. It meets the old trail twice after that. The last half a mile is steep.
Current condition: most of the trail is well packed snow, not icy. The first couple of miles were free of snow. A lot of people on the trail. I used micro-spikes. Coming down the steep section requires some caution. I saw 2 people carrying ice-ax, and a few with real crampons. Also saw some without any traction device on their shoes.
Road condition: snow free.
